Family Ecotour at the Caño Negro Refuge

This was another gorgeous ecological boat tour at the Caño Negro Wildlife refuge, with a very nice German family with 2 kids.We take the boat in our private pear at Hotel de Campo, 6am sharp. We begin to exploring the lagoon that is just in front of the hotel. We can’t miss the Nicaraguan Crackle and the friendly jacanas walking over the lilies. A juvenile of a Little Blue Heron, with a nice color changing was on the shore.Normally caiman love the sun, but this morning we were very lucky to...

A family boat tour in Caño Negro

The sun rises at 5am this morning. No clouds, finally after a few days of cloudy sky, and some rain.We leave the hotel to discover the Refuge of Caño Negro with a nice family with 2 young kids. We begin navigating the lagoon just in front of the hotel, called “La Capilla”. We start the day spotting a beautiful vivid brown and yellows wings Jacana walking over a lily. And suddenly a deep black mal of Nicaraguan crackle flirting to a female. We continue in the lagoon, where a shiny white...

Travel to Costa Rica from Germany: San Jose to Hotel de Campo Caño Negro by bus.

I travel to Costa Rica from Germany. I arrived at San Jose airport in the early evening. After staying a night at a friend’s place, I took the journey up to Caño Negro Refuge by bus. Starting in San Jose bus station (terminal 7 – 10) at 9 o`clock the bus route took me over Ciudad Quesada to Los Chiles. The purchase of the bus ticket was very easy, the sales person even spoke a few words in English. In Ciudad Quesada we stopped for a 15 minutes break, where...

Caño Negro Refuge: A successful Boat Tour in a rainy morning

At the Caño Negro Refuge, our guest was really worried she couldn’t see many animals - especially birds - because of the heavy rainfall we had this morning. After 3 hours in Caño Negro Refuge we were able to see so many different species of birds from Herons like the Boat-billed Herons, many Kingfishers, Red-winged Blackbirds to Swallows. We were lucky enough to watch capuchin monkeys stealing eggs out of bird nests, a totally wet sloth hanging in the tree, a lot of caimans, basilisks, bats and many more. Caño...

Caño Negro Birding: Least Bittern Tour

For today Caño Negro Birding boat tour, the Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis) was the star of the day.We had a couple from Germany here who booked a 5h Photography Tour with us. In the end we would have stayed in the Caño Negro Refuge way longer if it hadn’t got so dark. As we were walking to the pier, we past a beautiful male Plumed Basilisk and later on we saw many Green Iguanas running around at the shore. As we went further into the Caño Negro Refuge we were fortunate...
