This is not a conventional wildlife photography workshop. There are no feeders, staged scenes or artificial setups designed to produce predictable photographs. Instead, we take you into the natural environment of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, where wildlife determines what happens and the photographer learns to respond to the moment.
The refuge is our stage. Nature writes the script.
Our approach is based on photographing birds and wildlife in their natural habitat, working with changing light, natural behaviour and the unexpected encounters that make every day in Caño Negro different. You may know where the wildlife can be found, but you never know exactly what will happen next.
This is where photography becomes more than simply pointing a camera at a subject. It is about reading the environment, anticipating behaviour, understanding light and being ready when a unique moment appears.
The workshop will also extend beyond still photography into 4K wildlife videography and field soundscaping, creating a complete multimedia approach to documenting the natural world.

Hotel de Campo Caño Negro is located in the village of Caño Negro, directly in front of the lagoon and beside the protected wetland of the Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge. Our sustainable hotel in Costa Rica has developed in harmony with its natural surroundings, combining accommodation, nature, agriculture and responsible tourism in one unique setting.
Hotel de Campo is set on a 5-hectare property that includes forest, agroforestry areas and a large tropical botanical garden developed over more than two decades. The garden is home to more than 100 species of plants, including native trees, fruit trees, medicinal plants, ornamental plants and timber species, creating habitat and providing food and shelter for birds and other wildlife.
Our approach to sustainable tourism in Costa Rica is based on practical actions that are part of our everyday operation. We use organic fertilisers and no pesticides in our gardens, produce part of the food served at the hotel on our farm, purchase additional products from local farmers, and employ people from the surrounding community.
For our guests, sustainability is part of the experience itself. Staying at Hotel de Campo means waking up surrounded by a living tropical botanical garden, observing birds and wildlife around the property, enjoying locally produced food, and exploring the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge through responsible nature and wildlife experiences.

Hotel de Campo Caño Negro offers a different approach to sustainable tourism in Costa Rica: the hotel is surrounded by a living tropical botanical garden that has been developed for more than two decades. Across our five-hectare property, forest, agroforestry areas, gardens and open spaces form a natural environment around the accommodation rather than simply serving as landscaping.
With more than 100 species of plants, including native trees, fruit trees, medicinal plants, ornamental species and timber trees, the property changes with the seasons as different plants flower and produce fruit. For our guests, this means that nature is part of the stay itself — visible and audible around the rooms, gardens and pathways throughout the day.
A Botanical Garden Made for Birding in Costa Rica
Our botanical garden has also been shaped by more than 28 years of observing how birds and other wildlife use the property. Inspired by our interest in birdwatching and ecotourism in Costa Rica, we have learned which trees, flowers and fruit-bearing plants attract different species and how vegetation can provide the conditions wildlife needs to live naturally.
Today, the garden provides habitat for a remarkable variety of Costa Rican birds and wildlife, including mammals, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies and many other species. When selecting new plants, we consider not only their beauty but also their ecological function — whether they can provide food, shelter or places for wildlife to reproduce.
As a result, the property itself has become part of the birdwatching and wildlife experience at Hotel de Campo. Guests can observe nature around the hotel throughout the day, complementing the time they spend exploring the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. The experience therefore does not begin when you board the boat or end when you return: nature continues around you at Hotel de Campo.
A few tips for a great Vacation in Costa Rica
The boat is the best way to experience Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. Caño Negro is a dynamic tropical wetland formed by lagoons, waterways, flooded areas and the Río Frío, and exploring from the water allows you to reach the habitats where much of its birdlife and wildlife can be observed.
At Hotel de Campo Caño Negro, we operate our own boat tours within the boundaries of the refuge, exploring its lagoons and the Río Frío. Depending on your interests, the experience can focus on wildlife observation, birdwatching, nature photography, videography or nature sound recording.
Staying in Caño Negro also gives you greater flexibility to experience the wetland at different times of day rather than spending several hours travelling to and from another destination.
Whenever you can! Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge can be visited throughout the year, and every season offers a different experience. Water levels, vegetation, wildlife activity and the presence of migratory birds change throughout the year, so there is no single season that is best for every visitor.
If your main interest is birdwatching in Costa Rica, wildlife photography or finding particular target species, the best period may depend on exactly what you hope to see. Tell us your interests before your visit and we can help you understand what you are more likely to encounter during that period.
For nature lovers without a specific target species, both the green and drier seasons provide excellent opportunities to experience Caño Negro.
The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is one of Costa Rica’s important wetland habitats for birds and wildlife. Depending on the season and natural conditions, visitors may encounter herons, kingfishers, raptors, Jabirus, waterbirds and many other resident and migratory species.
The refuge also provides habitat for monkeys, caimans, iguanas, turtles and many other animals. Wildlife sightings are always natural, so no particular species can be guaranteed.
For birdwatchers and photographers, Caño Negro is particularly rewarding because its combination of lagoons, river, flooded habitats and forest creates opportunities to observe a wide variety of species during the same visit. The botanical garden and forest at Hotel de Campo provide additional opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife observation before and after your time inside the refuge.
A day trip can provide a good introduction to the refuge, but staying overnight in Caño Negro gives you more time to experience the destination rather than simply visit it.
Many day visitors travel several hours to reach Caño Negro and must then return to another destination. Staying locally allows more flexibility for morning or afternoon activities, changing weather conditions, bird activity and photography.

One night provides a good introduction, while two or three nights allow a much more complete Caño Negro experience.
A one-night stay works well for travellers who want to combine accommodation with an introduction to the refuge. With two or three nights, there is more flexibility to experience different times of day, enjoy the hotel property and dedicate additional time to specific interests such as birdwatching, wildlife photography, videography or nature sound recording.

This is an important part of the Hotel de Campo experience: we are not simply a place to sleep before or after visiting the refuge. Nature and wildlife activities are part of what we do.
Our boat experiences range from general wildlife and nature observation to specialised activities for travellers whose main interest is birdwatching, wildlife photography, videography or nature sound recording.
Because our guests stay beside the wetland and our activities are organised directly from Hotel de Campo, accommodation, meals and exploring the refuge can all be coordinated from one place — All Services in One Place.
Our EcoNature experiences are designed for travellers who want to discover the nature and wildlife of Caño Negro, while our Birding experiences are designed for travellers arriving with a specific interest or objective.
EcoNature packages include accommodation, meals and one shared three-hour boat tour during the stay. They are an excellent choice for nature lovers who want a broad introduction to the refuge.
Birding experiences use a private boat, providing the additional flexibility needed when the objective is birdwatching, photography, videography or sound recording. The boat can move at your pace and dedicate more attention to your particular interests.
You do not need to be an expert birder. Birding describes your reason for visiting Caño Negro, not your level of experience.
A 4×4 is not normally necessary simply because you are visiting Caño Negro, but the best route and road conditions can depend on where you are travelling from and the season.
Road conditions in rural Costa Rica can change, particularly during periods of heavy rain, so we recommend checking your route before travelling rather than relying only on the shortest route suggested by a navigation application.

For an ecotourism experience in Caño Negro, bring lightweight and comfortable clothing suitable for a warm tropical climate, together with sun protection, insect repellent and a waterproof rain jacket. Weather can change quickly around a tropical wetland, particularly during the green season.
Binoculars are highly recommended, even if you are not a dedicated birder. Photographers should bring a telephoto lens; the wildlife is wild and cannot be expected to remain close to the boat.
Our boats have a roof, providing protection from direct sun and light rain, but a rain jacket is still useful. If birdwatching or photography is an important part of your trip, contact us before travelling and we can help you prepare for your particular experience.
Caño Negro is a tropical wetland, so mosquitoes and other insects are naturally present, but that does not mean visitors are constantly surrounded by mosquitoes.
During our boat tours, mosquitoes are generally not a major problem. Conditions can nevertheless vary depending on the season, weather, time of day and location, so we recommend bringing insect repellent.
Lightweight long sleeves can also be useful. Insects are part of the ecosystem you have travelled to experience, but with basic preparation they should not prevent you from enjoying birdwatching, wildlife observation or other nature activities in Caño Negro.
Hotel de Campo does not accept credit cards. Payments can be made in cash in Costa Rican colones, US dollars or euros.
There are no banks or ATMs in Caño Negro, so please bring sufficient cash before arriving. If you are travelling from another destination in Costa Rica, we recommend obtaining cash before continuing to Caño Negro rather than waiting until you reach the village.
